Title: The Snow Leopard Project Pdf And Other Adventures in Warzone Conservation

Captivating....With clarity and a bit of awe, Dehgan describes Afghanistan's geological past and its 'dramatic and largely unappreciated biodiversity'....He leaves readers with an optimistic message that, in any sphere of life, effective collaboration toward common goals can benefit everyone.―Publishers WeeklyThe Snow Leopard Project is a richly detailed chronicle of Alex Dehgan's often-harrowing journey through Afghanistan to help save stunningly beautiful parts of a war-torn land. Dehgan is a brave and intrepid traveler, and he takes readers into his adventures with unique wildlife in one of the planet's most remote landscapes. His improbable journey, rendered with grace and insight, is a must-read for anyone who craves adventure and is curious about the world beyond our borders.―Rajiv Chandrasekaran, author of Little America: The War Within the War for AfghanistanSaving snow leopards and opening a national park in a warzone sounds crazy, but that's just what Alex Dehgan set out to do in Afghanistan. This is a remarkable story of courage, humor, and tenacity---and making peace where the politicians have failed. Dehgan brought people together through an unexpected common purpose-protecting one of the world's most exquisite endangered animals.―Christina Lamb, O.B.E., chief foreign correspondent, The Sunday Times, co-author of I Am Malala and The Sewing Circle of HeratIn The Snow Leopard Project, Alex Dehgan shows us that the biological Silk Road-with its Marco Polo sheep, show leopards, and ibex-is as unique and diverse as the cultural Silk Road. He takes us into the heart of war-torn Afghanistan on a mission to survery the biodiversity, to set aside national parks, and to investigate the illegal wildlife trade. This book engages the reader from the very beginning, with a gripping, fast-paced set of adventure stories and a moral imperative. It should be required reading for anyone interested in conservation.―Patricia Wright, conservationist and founder of the Institute for the Conservation of Tropical Environments, Stonybrook University, MacArthur Genius Award-winnerAn eye-opening account of what it takes to protect wildlife under improbable conditions. Dehgan's zeal for conservation, passion for humanitarian outreach, and admiration for the Afghan people spring from every page.―Booklist[An] intriguing, detailed, frequently unnerving account... The author vividly describes the rugged lands he and his crew encountered... Dehgan's lessons provide a sort of textbook on the frustrations and complexities of working on conservation in a place where science runs into the snarls of politics and diplomacy-and often loses―Kirkus Reviews"Less a book about research than about the trials, triumphs and occasional absurdity of building a conservation programme in extreme circumstances."―Nature"The Snow Leopard Project illuminates a vital area of science - and a country filled with natural and cultural beauty. I was captivated by Dehgan's writing, chapter by chapter."―National Public Radio"A stunning true story about efforts to protect these endangered cats and other rare species while also helping to defend the human culture around them-and strengthening the bond between people and nature in the process."―The Revelator"This compelling look at conservation efforts in a war-torn country is a must-read for anyone interested in attempts to stem the loss of biodiversity."―Library Journal Alex Dehgan is the founder and CEO of Conservation X Labs, which is focused on transforming the field of conservation through technological and financial innovation. Previously, he was USAID's first chief scientist in twenty years, and ensured that USAID became the global leader on employing science, technology, and creativity to help solve development challenges. Prior to his tenure at USAID, he worked at the Department of State on science diplomacy under Ambassador Dennis Ross, and later under Ambassador Holbrooke and the Office of the Special Representative to the President for Afghanistan and Pakistan. He was the William Rainey Harper Fellow for the Biological Sciences Division at the University of Chicago, and was granted a Searle Fellowship and a National Science Foundation Predoctoral Fellowship among twenty-one other awards, fellowships, and grants he has received during the tenure of his career. He currently teaches at Duke University. He has worked and traveled in almost ninety countries across five continents.

The remarkable story of the heroic effort to save and preserve Afghanistan's wildlife-and a culture that derives immense pride and a sense of national identity from its natural landscape.

Postwar Afghanistan is fragile, volatile, and perilous. It is also a place of extraordinary beauty. Evolutionary biologist Alex Dehgan arrived in the country in 2006 to build the Wildlife Conservation Society's Afghanistan Program, and preserve and protect Afghanistan's unique and extraordinary environment, which had been decimated after decades of war.

Conservation, it turned out, provided a common bond between Alex's team and the people of Afghanistan. His international team worked unarmed in some of the most dangerous places in the country-places so remote that winding roads would abruptly disappear, and travel was on foot, yak, or mule. In The Snow Leopard Project, Dehgan takes readers along with him on his adventure as his team helps create the country's first national park, completes the some of the first extensive wildlife surveys in thirty years, and works to stop the poaching of the country's iconic endangered animals, including the elusive snow leopard. In doing so, they help restore a part of Afghan identity that is ineffably tied to the land itself.

Gripping stories of conservation in the field Alex Dehgan does an excellent job of bringing you to the front lines of conservation and conflict in this well written book. Highly recommend it for all interested in how to save the wild of the planet in the face of political upheaval and the weakening of civil societies.Penetrating, revelatory, fascinating book Dehgan brings a refreshing, remarkable new perspective to Afghanistan--the "Graveyard of Empires"-- is vibrantly alive. Its amazing biodiversity, natural resources and stunning landscapes are too often ignored. Dehgan's mission is an unusual one; "warzone conservation" sounds like an oxymoron, and a dangerous one at that. The story of his teams' work--first to document wildlife and then build the first ever national park--is compelling, wrenching and often very funny. Dehgan is a winsome companion on the page; he takes his work seriously, but he is self-deprecating, candid and adept at describing both science and the singular world in which he operates. Science, diplomacy and conservation are not words that usually belong together, but this book demonstrates another level at which countries, organizations and individuals can work together toward a common goal.

Title: Lake Success Pdf A Novel

An Amazon Best Book of September 2018:: By most measures, Barry Cohen has achieved the American Dream. He manages a hedge fund with $2.4 billion in assets. He lives in Tribeca and has a beautiful wife. He even has a case full of extremely expensive watches. He appears, at least on the surface, to be a highly unlikely candidate for a cross-country journey to find himself. But when we first meet Barry, he is stressed out and unhappy, and he is bleeding because his wife recently attacked him. Soon we learn that there is more imperfection in his life: his son is autistic and an SEC investigation is hanging over his head. So when Barry gets on a Greyhound and tries to leave it all behind (naively seeking out a long lost college girlfriend), we understand the allure he finds in busing himself into the unknown. There is humor in this novel, much of it recognizably Shteyngartian; there is also a dark line running across this story like a line drawn across a map. Shteyngart traces that line, setting his story in the summer of 2016. As Barry meets “real” Americans—i.e. the other 99.9%-- they help to fill in the parts of Barry that are missing. Some readers will feel for Barry’s plight, some won’t. It was Shteyngart’s incisive observations about how we view ourselves and our country that drew me in. There are many different American Dreams out there. But are dreams real? --Chris Schluep, Amazon Book Review “This is a novel that seems to have been created in real time, reflecting with perfect comedy and horrible tragedy exactly what America feels like right this minute. As I read Lake Success, I barked with laughter, at the same time wincing in pain. Gary Shteyngart has held up a mirror to American culture that is so accurate, and so devastating, that it makes you want to break the mirror right over your own head. I mean this as a good thing. The novel is stupendous.”—Elizabeth Gilbert“The fuel and oxygen of immigrant literature—movement, exile, nostalgia, cultural disorientation—are what fire the pistons of this trenchant and panoramic novel. . . . Chief among this novel’s pleasures is viewing the nation—its landscapes, its people, its curdled politics, its increasingly feudal inequalities—through the vibrant filters of Shteyngart’s Hipstamatic mind. . . . [It is] a novel so pungent, so frisky and so intent on probing the dissonances and delusions—both individual and collective—that grip this strange land getting stranger.”—The New York Times Book Review “In Shteyngart’s hands, hard-won family love trumps the false values of materialism. Lake Success is another super sad love story, certainly, but an artistic triumph.”—San Francisco Chronicle  “A novel in which comedy and pathos are exquisitely balanced . . . timely but not fleeting. Its bold ambition to capture the nation and the era is enriched by its shrewd attention to the challenges and sorrows of parenthood. Barry Cohen, the glad-handing protagonist, repels our sympathy while laying claim to it. . . . There’s something uncanny about Shteyngart’s ability to inhabit this man’s boundless confidence, his neediness, his juvenile tendency to fall in love and imagine everyone as a life-changing friend. . . . [This is also] one of the most heartbreaking novels I’ve read about raising a child with special needs.”—The Washington Post “Juxtapositions of immense power and shocking vulnerability, glory and abasement, financial wealth and emotional impoverishment run throughout Lake Success, a rollicking, uproariously funny, bitingly satiric yet also warm and big-hearted novel.”—The Boston Globe “[A] spectacular, sprawling new novel . . . Throughout his career, Shteyngart has proven himself a cheeky comic daredevil, but never more so than in this novel. . . . An artistic tour de force.”—Maureen Corrigan, NPR “Shteyngart, perhaps more than any American writer of his generation, is a natural. He is light, stinging, insolent and melancholy. . . . The wit and the immigrant’s sense of heartbreak—he was born in Russia—just seem to pour from him. The idea of riding along behind Shteyngart as he glides across America in the early age of Trump is a propitious one. He doesn’t disappoint.”—The New York Times  “Lake Success combines the passive-aggressive takeover of New York by the Bros of Wall Street—a subject worthy of Tom Wolfe—with a road novel that echoes Kerouac’s buzzy restlessness and Nabokov’s sly observations. It’s Shteyngart’s best book, a deeper dive into what’s happening now with a plaintive edge that fits the moment.”—The Seattle Times “From one of our finest comic novelists comes a work with equal parts smarts and heart to go with the steady hilarity of its plot and prose. . . . Surely the funniest book of the year, indeed one of the best overall.”—Newsday  “Lake Success is a big-hearted book about many things. It’s a brilliant satire of hedge fund managers, their trophy wives and gaudy apartments; a heart-rending but ultimately hopeful account of raising a child on the spectrum; and a raucous celebration of racial, ethnic and gender identity in America today.”—Associated Press “The multiple-time-New-York-Times-bestselling author has written several tomes that hit the perfect note of very funny and very true, and he continues that pattern in Lake Success.”—Entertainment Weekly “Darkly hilarious.”—People “A darkly comic journey to the heart of Donald Trump–era America, one that explores the wages of narcissism, skewers the excesses of the ultrarich, and ultimately probes the hope that we may find ways to get beyond our starkly defined differences and be better to one another.”—The Atlantic “Shteyngart sets up [Barry] Cohen’s dilemma beautifully, and the scenes of Cohen’s travels contain gorgeous writing. . . . It is in these scenes that Lake Success is at its most powerful and offers the most pointed observations of present-day America. . . . An apt work for this strange era in American history.”—Houston Chronicle “What if the central character of Jack Kerouac’s On the Road was an unraveling hedge-fund manager on the lam in the era of Donald Trump? Cue Gary Shteyngart’s new novel, Lake Success. It’s a morality tale-meets-road trip that any ardent reader—though perhaps not subject—of today’s financial headlines will appreciate.”—Reuters  “Guys like Barry are always going to be OK, saved by their money and privilege. Shteyngart is careful not to make Barry a black hat—his interactions with his autistic son are compassionately rendered, and Barry is more dim than craven. But a nice guy who does not-nice work serves as a warning as well as a punch line.” —Minneapolis StarTribune  “Lake Success is often satiric, deploying the same sharp skills as Shteyngart’s earlier novels . . . a cool control of tone, a Tom Wolfe–level eye for status markers, a knack for making the outrageous sound all too plausible. But Lake Success has depths. Barry might be the oblivious poster boy for white male privilege, but Shteyngart makes us feel for the people around him.”—Tampa Bay Times “It begins with the ultimate incongruity. . . . Shteyngart’s gift for such contrasts combined with his astute eye for the nuances of American life and a poignant sense of humor make him an ideal author to tackle the onset of the Trump era, when it often felt as if Americans occupied two antithetical realities.”—AM New York  “Hilarious and poignant . . . does not disappoint.”—New York Post “Quirky and often darkly hilarious.”—Mother Jones  “An ambitious state-of-the-nation novel about the miasma of discontents that produced the astonishing election result of 2016 . . . Lake Success is spiky, timely and true.”—The Guardian  “Lake Success is a genial and warm-hearted book. . . . A virtuoso piece of work, full of brilliant noticings . . . It’s also, remarkably, an unhysterical novel about a hysterical country at a hysterical time—the work of a novelist who believes in the power of fiction to illuminate our shared world.”—Literary Review  “[Barry Cohen’s] journey across America, relearning how real people talk and how the country works, is ironic, hilarious, infuriating and strangely touching. . . . Barry is a complex, well-realised character. . . . Funny, cutting, but above all compassionate.”—The Herald  “Lake Success is undeniably enjoyable, rattling along with good jokes and sharp set pieces, and shot through with Shteyngart’s good-natured melancholy.”—The Times (UK)

“Spectacular.”—NPR • “Uproariously funny.”—The Boston Globe • “An artistic triumph.”—San Francisco Chronicle • “A novel in which comedy and pathos are exquisitely balanced.”—The Washington Post • “Shteyngart’s best book.”—The Seattle Times

The bestselling author of Super Sad True Love Story returns with a biting, brilliant, emotionally resonant novel very much of our times.

Narcissistic, hilariously self-deluded, and divorced from the real world as most of us know it, hedge-fund manager Barry Cohen oversees $2.4 billion in assets. Deeply stressed by an SEC investigation and by his three-year-old son’s diagnosis of autism, he flees New York on a Greyhound bus in search of a simpler, more romantic life with his old college sweetheart. Meanwhile, his super-smart wife, Seema—a driven first-generation American who craved the picture-perfect life that comes with wealth—has her own demons to face. How these two flawed characters navigate the Shteyngartian chaos of their own making is at the heart of this piercing exploration of the 0.1 Percent, a poignant tale of familial longing and an unsentimental ode to what really makes America great.

I learned what a watch winder was I learned what a watch winder was! A book hung up on watches and watch winders or maybe I am. Billionaires and humor and observations of America as a late middle-aged man with too much falls apart and travels across America on a Grey Hound, with other plot points and assorted chaos in passing. Lake Success got a great review from NPR so I bought it. Well Ok, I like it, but "sprawling" and "great" I don't think so! It is too short to be sprawling and it is not well enough written to be great, but it does talk about Billionaire affectations as the billionaire has a breakdown and decides to travel with the 'smelly people' on a Greyhound from La di dah to la di da and Texas and on to California and this main character has a watch fetish, and this is where I learned of watch winders. And I suppose that is sad about him and sad about the book and the country the novel attempts to satirize.Disappointing Effort I've been a fan of Gary Shteyngart since The Russian Debutante's Handbook, so I looked forward to Lake Success with great anticipation, which was only partially rewarded.Lake Success tells the story of Barry Cohen and his wife Seema, one percenters whose lives have come badly unglued. Their dreams of perfect children have been shattered by the birth of an autistic son; Barry's hedge fund is under scrutiny from the SEC for insider trading, and their marriage is unraveling. Against this backdrop, Barry takes off for a Greyhound bus journey across America, ostensibly a trip to rediscover and redeem himself.Shteyngart's eye for the insane excesses of the ultra-rich is dead-on; he endlessly catalogues their narcissism, their petty materialism, their smug certainty that they are morally superior for having accumulated obscene wealth, and their elaborate self-justification. All of that makes for familiar territory, and Shteyngart mines the abundant comic potential for all it's worth. But where the novel falters is in its attempt to show moral redemption. To be blunt, Barry's lengthy sojourn on Greyhound buses, together with the slow realization that he is a lucky fraud, are not convincing. Similarly, Seema's hypocritical acceptance of her life of privilege without self-examination, followed by a pivot to acceptance of her past, is equally tepid. I understand that Shteyngart needed some plot structure to build a novel around, and eventually both Barry and Seema come to terms with their son, but the novel feels more like a series of funny sketches than a coherent and believable narrative. I laughed and enjoyed Lake Success, but it felt a little like gorging on junk food; there wasn't all that much substance.

"Ruthlessly wicked...Wonderful...His best book yet."
ATLANTA JOURNAL & CONSTITUTION
When the precious clue-tongued mango voles at the Amazing Kingdom of Thrills on North Key Largo are stolen by heartless, ruthless thugs, Joe Winder wants to uncover why, and find the voles. Joe is lately a PR man for the Amazing Kingdom theme park, but now that the voles are gone, Winder is dragged along in their wake through a series of weird and lethal events that begin with the sleazy real-estate agent/villain Francis X. Kingsbury and can end only one way....

BONUS: This edition includes an excerpt from Carl Hiaasen's Bad Monkey.

One of the funniest novels I've ever read I get tired of Hiassen's moralizing about the mangroves and have accepted it as one of the costs of reading his work. But he is so worth it. This is one of the funniest novels I've ever read. Hiassen has a gift for creating interesting stories with well-defined, quirky but relatable characters, and he can write comic dialogue like nobody's business; he is the best I've ever seen this side of John Kennedy Toole. If you are thinking of dipping into Carl Hiassen's comic novels, this is the book to start with. It's funny as hell.Wonderful diversion I am74 but recommend for almost any age from mature teens and up. I love Florida and wanted to retire there but could not make it. This the next best thing. Have fun.Another great book A Disney like theme park run by a mob-rat in witness protection; A sleazy PR boss and the PR employee who just can't handle the lies, two stolen endangered animals, that are actually just regular animals with their tongues painted purple, an enthusiastic group of elderly protectors of wildlife, the leader isn't afraid to use a gun; two clueless criminals; and Skink the former governor turned hermit. Why We Fight Pdf

Title: Why We Fight Pdf One Man
Author: Josh Rosenblatt
Published Date: 2019-01-15
Page: 224

“Fascinating . . . a highly lucid, very personal meditation on selfhood.” (NPR Books)“Glistens with illuminations about courage and aging. The aim was self-transformation. Win or lose, it was mission accomplished.” (Wall Street Journal)“A story of perilous becoming.” (Los Angeles Times)“A book worth reading not only for those who enjoy MMA and other forms of professional fighting, but for those who are baffled as to why such a bloody sport would ever be appealing. . . . Rosenblatt’s observations about being a Jewish athlete are also quite timely.” (Salon)“Rosenblatt offers much food for thought in this intellectual memoir blending sports and self-transformation.” (Library Journal)“A very entertaining and informative chronicle of a quixotic journey of self-examination.” (Booklist)“Over the last several years I’ve read quite a few books by thoughtful men and women about the lure of various forms of fighting. Josh Rosenblatt’s Why We Fight is much the best of this mini-genre.” (David Shields, author of The Thing About Life Is That One Day You’ll Be Dead)“This is a terrific story—funny and scary and moving—as well as a thoughtful meditation on bravery, violence, pain, aging, and how getting hit in the face can change your life for the better.” (Paul Bloom, Yale University, author of Against Empathy: The Case for Rational Compassion)“‘But I was tired of myself, so I said yes.’ And thus begins Rosenblatt’s journey from chicken to beast. I loved this book mostly for its gorgeous restraint. It ain’t a macho brag but rather a piece of Old Testament prophecy. A clarion call advocating the importance of physicality.” (Chas Smith, author of Welcome to Paradise, Now Go to Hell: A True Story of Violence, Corruption, and the Soul of Surfing)“Erudite.” (Publishers Weekly) “Anyone with guts or madness in him can get hit by someone who knows how; it takes a different kind of madness, a more persistent kind, to stick around long enough to be one of the people who does the knowing.”Josh Rosenblatt was thirty-three years old when he first realized he wanted to fight. A lifelong pacifist with a philosopher’s hatred of violence and a dandy’s aversion to exercise, he drank to excess, smoked passionately, ate indifferently, and mocked any physical activity that didn’t involve nudity. But deep down there was always a part of him that was dying to know what it was like to hit and get hit, to harm and be harmed. He sensed that to fight would be to live life deeply. So, after studying Muay Thai, Krav Maga, Brazilian jiujitsu, and boxing for nearly a decade, he finally decided, at age forty, that it was time to fight a mixed martial arts match: all in the name of experience and transcending ancient fears. An insightful and moving rumination on the nature of fighting, Why We Fight takes us on Rosenblatt’s journey from the bleachers to the ring. Using his own training as an opportunity to understand how the sport illuminates basic human impulses, Rosenblatt weaves together cultural history, criticism, biology, and anthropology to understand what happens to the human body and mind when under attack, and to explore why he, a self-described cowardly boy from the suburbs, discovered so much meaning in putting his body, and others’, at risk. From the psychology of fear to the physiology of pain, from Ukrainian shtetls to Brooklyn boxing gyms, from Lord Byron to George Plimpton, Why We Fight is a fierce inquiry into the abiding appeal of our most conflicted and controversial fixation, interwoven with a firsthand account of what happens when a mild-mannered intellectual decides to step into the ring for his first real showdown.

A physical and philosophical mediation on why we are drawn to fight each other for sport, what happens to our bodies and brains when we do, and what it all means

Anyone with guts or madness in him can get hit by someone who knows how; it takes a different kind of madness, a more persistent kind, to stick around long enough to be one of the people who does the knowing.

Josh Rosenblatt was thirty-three years old when he first realized he wanted to fight. A lifelong pacifist with a philosopher’s hatred of violence and a dandy’s aversion to exercise, he drank to excess, smoked passionately, ate indifferently, and mocked physical activity that didn’t involve nudity. But deep down inside there was always some part of him that was attracted to the idea of fighting. So, after studying Muay Thai, Krav Maga, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and boxing, he decided, at age forty, that it was finally time to fight his first—and only—mixed martial arts match: all in the name of experience and transcending ancient fears.

An insightful and moving rumination on the nature of fighting, Why We Fight takes us on his journey from the bleachers to the ring. Using his own training as an opportunity to understand how the sport illuminates basic human impulses, Rosenblatt weaves together cultural history, criticism, biology, and anthropology to understand what happens to the human body and mind when under attack, and to explore why he, a self-described “cowardly boy from the suburbs,” discovered so much meaning in putting his body, and others’, at risk.

Engrossing chronicle of a historically non-physical individual's motivations and observations upon diving in to experience the world of MMA/fighting. The author writes crisply and clearly and not only objectively describes his personal journey to becoming a fighter, but skillfully incorporates historical and literary references, as well as scientific information, all of which provide added texture and information to his subjective observations. A provocative, stimulating effort, recommended not only for fans of the sport, but for those interested in the psychoogy of humans' predisposition to aggressiveness and/or brutality.Read this book fight or fighters! This was a great read. An exploration or our inner coward and outer bravery, Why We Fight makes you tap into your own feelings of fight or flight. And that is something we all need to think about. An experience This book took swings at my reality, slowly and methodically like Poe's pendulum- with his observations on fighting cutting me, barely at first, forcing me to ask myself if I was truly living- fully experiencing all life has to offer. Then offering a rational reprieve as the pendulum swings away and he objectively took a more reasonable and rational approach to his journey. Then cutting again as he goes back to how alive fighting- and courting death and destruction- makes him feel. The suspense of the pending fight becomes greater than the fight itself, and it was a thrilling tale and exploration of what it means to be alive.

A favorite among successful students, and often recommended by professors, the unique Examples & Explanations series gives you extremely clear introductions to concepts followed by realistic examples that mirror those presented in the classroom throughout the semester. Use at the beginning and midway through the semester to deepen your understanding through clear explanations, corresponding hypothetical fact patterns, and analysis. Then use to study for finals by reviewing the hypotheticals as well as the structure and reasoning behind the accompanying analysis. Designed to complement your casebook, the trusted Examples & Explanations titles get right to the point in a conversational, often humorous style that helps you learn the material each step of the way and prepare for the exam at the end of the course.

The unique, time-tested Examples & Explanations series is invaluable to teach yourself the subject from the first day of class until your last review before the final. Each guide:

  • helps you learn new material by working through chapters that explain each topic in simple language

  • provides valuable opportunity to study for the final by reviewing the hypotheticals as well as the structure and reasoning behind the corresponding analysis
