Starting in late 2012, Westerners working in Syria -- journalists and aid workers -- began disappearing without a trace. A year later the world learned they had been taken hostage by the Islamic State. Throughout 2014, all the Europeans came home, first the Spanish, then the French, then an Italian, a German, and a Dane. In August 2014, the Islamic State began executing the Americans -- including journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff, followed by the British hostages.

The stories from those whose loved ones did not make it our alive will break your heart.For anyone interested in the subject, well worth the read. When I first read the author’s background I feared the book would be yet another typical offering that reflected a journalist’s biases and own social agenda rather than a simple statement of the facts. I was therefore pleasantly surprised that most of the book was a clear-eyed view of a complex and controversial subject. The policies and practices of various actors from governments to individual family members were described in enough detail to give a good overview of the present state of affairs regarding kidnapping for its many reasons. The one thing that I expected to be at least mentioned by some of those called upon to rescue kidnapping victims, however, was the question of why they thoughtlessly put themselves in a position to be taken hostage in the first place. For spies and diplomats I understand; for aid workers and journalists, not so much; for “adventure tourists” (as the book calls them), going into known danger zones and then expecting the resources of a national government to rescue them from their folly is unfathomable. Mountain search and rescue volunteers will grumble about having to find a hiker who was totally unprepared for the weather and the possibility his phone GPS dying, but no one expresses an opinion about a journalist who was kidnapped and then went back to the same danger area?In any event, I found the book informative enough that I will be giving it to a military special operations officer of my acquaintance.Insightful read on hostage negotiation regarding journalism I was curious about this book. Have you watched the TV Series "Ransom?" If you haven't, well, google it after you're done reading this because with that in mind, reading this was insightful. Over the years, I've watched on international news outlets calls for the release of journalists or Aid workers who were kidnapped in turbulent areas and I never fully grasped the stress, anxiety, negotiations and trauma that surrounds it.In this book, the author explores the roles of governments and media houses in such cases and not all the stories have happy endings which ultimately broke my heart.I liked how he presented the stories on both sides. Thanks for the eARC Netgalley, this book would be a great conversation on policies that affect international news coverage and politics whilst protecting reporters.

I am a scientist myself, and so the descriptions and the science behind the cooking is SO cool! Great gift for scientist friends in particular!! I have attached a few photos of some of the things I have prepared from the cook book and Kenji's website. The meals I have prepared have turned out absolutely delicious, AND they look very much like his professional photos too!!! This is the first time where I've followed the recipe, and what I make looks like what the authors made! This book is absolutely amazing. It will educate you, it will make you a smarter and more confident chef, and it will absolutely entertain you! Kenji has some subtle jokes throughout and some extremely cute pictures of dogs. Awesome book and will be purchasing for family and friends as gifts!Clear instructions and explanations, great recipes I have been waiting for this book to come out and it exceeds my expectations! Recipes included here are French fries, chicken, fish, and onion rings.- The front and back book covers insides have conversion tables to be opened or flipped to quickly as a reference.This book is over 900 pages and has a ton of photos both for techniques and presentations. The author's tone is filled with humor and is not pretentious. The explanations are really clear and educational.I will be updating this review further as I make recipes within the cookbook. I recommend this book to all experience levels of cooks as well as science-minded people.

Donald Voet received a Ph.D. in chemistry from Harvard University and did postdoctoral research in the Biology Department at MIT. Don took up a faculty position in the department of chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania, upon completing his postdoctoral work. He has been a visiting scholar at Oxford University, the University of California San Diego, and the Weismann Institute of Science in Israel. Judith Voet received her Ph.D. from Brandeis University and did postdoctoral research at the University of Pennsylvania, Haverford College and the Fox Chase Cancer Center. She taught at the University of Delaware before moving to Swarthmore College. Together with Don Voet, she is Co-Editor-in-Chief of the journal Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Education.

So far chapters 1-14 are the same as the fourth edition This book is written extremely well, did a better job at explaining than my teacher when he would leave the class confused. All the answers are in the book with good explaining and shows the math steps worked out so no need for solution manual. The only problems I had using it was understand the graphs around chapter 10 when solving for km but you can find better explanation on youtube. Chapters 1-14 had the same problems at the end of each chapter in edition 4 however they are number differently so you can check with your class mate which ones you need to do.I'm not too sure how much this book is like edition 4 in the later chapters after chapter 14 but I will update my review after my Advance Biochemistry goes further in the book. This book is lot cheaper to buy than the current edition so I would recommend this instead biochemistry 1 and avoid renting your book twice for two semesters.Originally my teacher told me this book would not work for biochemistry at UMSL but it was word for word in text.Get the digital copy. Good explanations and diagrams.Great Biochem book! This was a great book and probably one of the most straight forward science based textbooks I've ever read. I received an A in Biochem 1 & 2 and studied mostly from the textbook, just going over the power points from lecture once or twice before exams.
